Phantom Ship

1800mm x 900mm x 60mm

acrylic & varnish on hoop pine plywood

My Grandfather had a few books about boats, in particular boats from the Waitemata. ‘Phantom Fleet’ by Ted Ashby (published 1975) was one that caught my eye. There is an amazing photo at the end of the book showing a ‘Phantom Ship’ ghosting in past a misty Rangitoto. Ted Ashby was an expert on the Scows of Auckland, but he did not know this one. The image intrigued me and got my imagination going. This piece ‘Phantom Ship’ came from that image.
